CHANCE VOM COVEY RUN ("GAUGE")
|
|

Owner: Bill Soverns
Springdale, WA
Well today was a good day!
Opening grouse season and I
could not have asked for a
better beginning season with
Chance vom Covey Run (a/k/a
"Gauge"). As you know, he was
born May 10, 2005, so he is
not yet 4 months old.
Total for the day was 7 points
and 1 shot bird which was
retrieved to hand (although
not released without a small
battle, LOL). There is a
story on his first bird so I
must digress and fill you in.
It
was his 2nd point of the day
and it all happened suddenly.
He went on point and I flushed
the bird quickly, shot it and
marked where it fell then gave
him the command "fetch".
Gauge went crazy looking for
that bird and I "knew" where
it fell so I just stood back
and watched. Eventually I
wandered over to where the
bird was.....or so I thought.
No bird. Now I was mad at
myself for losing his first
bird. I looked everywhere and
could not locate it. Finally I
thought, well...Gauge has the
nose so I will just let him
find it. I sat down on a stump
and just let him search.
About 5 minutes later he came
trotting out of the brush with
his head and tail high holding
his bird. Brought it right to
me and sat down. Evidently the
bird wasn't quite dead when it
hit the ground and ran a
little before finally
expiring. I am very proud of
him and you should be as
well. His last point today
was his best one. He is
learning quickly to hold still
until I get there. Attached
is a picture. Feel free to
put this on your website if
you wish.
Regards,

Nancy,
Gauge got his 1st pheasant this
morning. We went to a release
site and it was extremely crowded
with hunters/dogs. Gauge pointed,
held and retrieved this bird with
precision. He has never even seen
a pheasant before and I was
tickled with his performance. I
have this picture in full size if
you want it. I have downsized it
considerably to make it easier to
email.
Have a great Thanksgiving.
Bill
