Q11: I am looking for a 45- pound female GSP or DK that's white, got a liver head with a white blaze, four large patches, and no ticking, just like my former dog. I want the dog on June 1st, and I want it to be . . . etc. etc. etc. Can you help me?

A: Probably not. Here's why: Buying a quality GSP or DK or other versatile breed puppy is more like expecting a new child than placing an order from a mail-order catalogue for a product. Although you can find virtually any color, size, etc. of GSP or DK available somewhere at some time, you're better off to find a breeder and/or breeding that you are interested in, and take your chances on the particulars. In our opinion, color/coat pattern should be the last determining factor in choosing your pet or hunting dog, unless you are presented with a choice between otherwise equal specimens. Ask yourself why you want the dog--is it because you want a good family pet that will get along well with your kids? Then temperament should be the primary determining factor in your choice of puppy or litter. Is it because you want a phenomenal field dog? Then natural abilities should be your primary concern. A combination of the two? Then those two factors should be of equal importance to you. Because you want to show your dog? Then overall conformation and temperament should be your main considerations. See? None of these involve color, per se, at all. . . A good, responsible breeder will help select your puppy for you based on your particular needs and desires, and those of your family. If that happens to correspond with your "ideal" color or coat pattern, then great. If not, that's ok, too. Chances are, just because a particular dog LOOKS just like your last dog, it won't ACT just like your last dog, anyway--just like kids, they're all individuals. . . and should be treated like individuals.
