a few geese while out today.
Just figured you'd get a kick
out of seeing a
"small" dog with some
"big" geese!

Hi Nancy! Hope you're doing well. I had a neat time Saturday and wanted to tell you about it. I took Adel duck hunting up on my new farm on the White River. It was harsh weather, snowing, 20 degrees. I couldn't call any ducks in so we (1 friend) just tried to sneak up on them. The river there was about 35 yards wide and 2-3 feet deep. We snuck up on a group of 20+ mallards in the river. They got up about 30 yards out and we got lucky and knocked down three. They all fell in the water but two of them were wounded. I sent "Del" after the deadest one as it was floating away down a riffle the fastest. At first she had a little trouble locating it and it got past without her seeing it so I motioned for her to go down river. She trailed it by scent on the water about 50 yards and finally got sight of it. She made a mad half swim half dash straight down stream in the middle of the river in about 2' of water and grabbed it, swam 90 degrees to the side across a little channel and came prancing up the bank to me with it proud as can be, sat down and offered it up. I took the duck and sent her after number two across the river. He was acting pretty sick until she got 5 yards away and he dove under water and swam downstream 30 yards. He looked pretty vigorous when he came up so I shot him again about 20 yards in front of her. The shot really motivated/focused her on him. She grabbed him and swam back across the river and did that prancing thing again, sat down and waited for "give". Number three had made its way to the bank on my side and had apparently crawled up on into the brush. I sent her upstream not knowing what to expect and she ran up the shoreline until she hit the spot where it left the water. She put her nose down on the track and followed it about 15 yards straight up into the brush, found it, picked it up and did that "prancing" thing again. I was so proud! She may be little (45#) but she is athletic and full of intense burning desire. Seemed a little bit like a "practical" for the Solms water work and gun sensitivity test to me. We've worked on these things but this was the first time she put it all together, back to back in a natural setting. We love this li'l girl pup. Thanks for a great dog!

PS--Adel just got her "SG" rating at
the zuchtschau (German conformation
show). This is the highest score she
can achieve as a young dog. . .
we're looking forward to the Solms
test this fall.
Spring,
2005 Update:
Adel
passed her SOLMS test, is certified
as HD-Frein, and is breed-eligible
now. I have been approved for the
kennel name "vom Wusteberg", and
Adel is due to whelp her first
litter in June, 2005. . .
