THE DOGS AT COVEY RUN |
|

At vom Covey Run Deutsch
Kurzhaars,
we
firmly believe that the
Deutsch Kurzhaar (DK) bloodlines
are the finest GSP bloodlines that
the world has to offer. We have
been breeding since 1990,
constantly striving to improve our
stock, both through our own
breeding, and through judicious
importing of new bloodlines from
the country of breed origin
(Germany). The result is what we
believe to be some of the finest
Deutsch Kurzhaars (DK's) available
in North America today. Our stud
dogs and brood bitches are proven
in the field, are free of any
discernible genetic diseases, are
of sound conformation, and exhibit
excellent temperaments and natural
abilities.
We occasionally have litters
of DK puppies, started dogs, and
sometimes finished dogs for
sale at vom Covey Run. All of the dogs
and puppies we breed are sold with
genetic and general health
guarantees, and are shipped
following a full veterinary health
exam. Whether you are looking for
a new pup, a started dog, or a
fully trained hunting companion,
please take a moment to visit the
following links to see if we can
help you find your perfect DK. . .

We don't breed often, and do not
do so to make a profit. We breed
strictly to please ourselves as a
hobby, and for the purpose of
improiving the DK bloodline in the
US. We don't expect to sell one of our
Deutsch Kurzhaars to every person
who visits our web page or who
calls us to inquire about a puppy
or started or finished dog. It is
very important to us that every
vom Covey Run Deutsch Kurzhaar be
placed in a home with an active,
licensed hunter. While DK's do
make excellent pets, the hunting
of and retrieval of a variety of
shot game is the intended purpose
that the breed was originally
developed for, and remains its
highest purpose today. Without
hunters to train and utilize them
for this purpose, the dogs will
not receive the specialized
training, guidance, and time afield, and therefore may not
realize their full mental and
physical potentials. It is for
these reasons that the German
breed club (DKV) insists that the
Deutsch Kurzhaar be placed only
with licensed, active hunters as
their owners.

It would be illogical to go
to the trouble of purchasing
a Deutsch Kurzhaar, or any
other truly versatile breed,
only to let him or her go
untrained, underutilized,
and unused for versatile
hunting tasks. In fact, it
would be similar to
purchasing a Kentucky Derby
contender or steeplechase
horse when all one desires
is a good pleasure or trail
riding horse. If you plan to
only hunt upland game birds
(quail or pheasant, for
instance), why not purchase
a breed that is a specialist
in that type of hunting,
such as an English Pointer
or English Setter? If you
only wish to hunt waterfowl,
who not go with a Labrador
Retriever, Chesapeake Bay
Retriever, or Nova Scotia
Duck Tolling Retriever. If
rabbit and varmint hunting
is your bag, consider a
specialist such as a beagle
or one of the many hound
breeds who excel at that
sport. If, on the other
hand, you are a true "meat
hunter" who enjoys hunting a
variety of varieties of
game--furred and feathered,
in a variety of conditions
and terrains, the "jack of
all trades" known as the
Deutsch Kurzhaar, may well
be the type of versatile dog
for you. . .
It is our requirement
that all of our DK puppy
buyers will join and
participate in the
testing programs of the
North American Deutsch
Kurzhaar Club (NADKC).
Some of the benefits of
membership include
access to training
clinics, field tests,
and experienced members
who are willing to share
their years of
experience and knowledge
of training, testing and
hunting with versatile
breeds like the DK.
Through the NADKC's
testing program, each
dog's performance is
fully evaluated to
further the goal of
improvement of the
breed. The German tests
that are required for
the breed closely mimic
actual hunting
conditions and scenarios
for upland game,
waterfowl, and furred
game, and are designed
to measure the dogs'
performance at the tasks
they were bred for, as
well as to certify them
as an approval process
for breeding.
If hunting and
participating in
these tests is
something you are
willing to commit
to, GREAT! However,
if you are simply
looking for an
excellent pet or
companion, we highly
recommend that you
consider adopting a
German Shorthaired
Pointer or another
deserving dog from a
breed rescue
organization or
humane society.
Alternatively, you
may consider the
purchase of one of
the non-sporting
breeds. There are
MANY, MANY wonderful
breeds available
that have been
selectively bred for
generations
specifically as
companion dogs that
would be delighted
to be a beloved
member of a
non-hunting home. If
you want a dog to
hunt with, but don't
want to test your
dog or be bound by
the pre-requisites
that are involved
with owning a DK,
then the Deutsch
Kurzhaar is probably
not the breed for
you. The Deutsch
Kurzhaar is,
instead, a versatile
dog for serious
hunters who are
looking for
excellent
performance in the
field, coupled with
companionship at
home. These rare and
committed
individuals must
also harbor a
genuine desire to
contribute to the
betterment of the
breed as a whole,
through the
mandatory
participation in
conformation
ratings, health and
genetic screenings,
field utility
certification tests,
and temperament
tests...
With these lofty
goals in mind,
these are the
things we ask
our potential
buyers to commit
to when they
purchase a DK
from vom Covey
Run:
-
Love your
dog and
treat
him/her as
a valued
member of
your
family
-
Join the
NADKC
and/or the
JGV-USA
and follow
all of
their
testing,
breeding,
and
membership
rules and
regulations
-
Intend to
train your
dog
yourself
for both
obedience
and
hunting
(with the
help and
advice of
others, of
course)
-
Raise the
dog IN
your home.
. . In our
opinion,
there is
no
comparison
between a
kennel dog
and a dog
raised
inside the
home as a
member of
the family
-
Be a
responsible,
caring
owner:
have a
proper
kennel to
be
utilized
when the
dog is
unattended,
and a
proper
crate for
transporting
the dog,
and
provide
quality
food,
shelter,
and
medical
care for
your DK
-
Be willing
and able
to expose
your DK to
a variety
of live
game, to
properly
train
him/her,
to hunt
frequently
with
him/her,
and to
take
him/her to
and handle
him/her in
the
required
tests

Owner:
Scott Sorenson
vom Adlerberg Kennels, Pullman,

"Scout" is a great dog. I am enclosing a photo of myself and him with two of his ribbons. He has won several local trials and taken the derby dog award, plus he has passed his NAVHDA Natural Ability Test, and gained 3 of the 4 legs needed for his Junior Hunter title in one weekend! Last fall I shot over 300 pheasants over him, as well as assorted ducks, grouse, quail, Hungarian partridge, chukar, and rabbits. He also blood trails my wounded deer/elk! He hunts like a seasoned veteran dog at only 2 years old. I'm currently training him for the NAVHDA Utility Test. Everyone that sees him hunt can't believe his age and how great he looks and hunts. I give them all your name. . . there's no comparison between these German import bloodlines and most of the ones you see over here in the US.
